Egret
This area of Texas is semitropical with plenty of ponds, lakes, & wetlands. Egrets come and go on a regular basis, but are always quite cautious. Eleanor however is the exception. She stayed for about 3 weeks and became trustful of me. I feed floating catfish food to the ducks and fish and Eleanor took advantage of this to do a little fishing. She repeatedly came to within 10 feet of me.
San Augustine and surrounding area
This is a Tulip tree blossom. It was taken at Bland lake outside of San Augustine. The tree is about 75 years old. The album linked to this picture contains a myriad of images from flowers to sunsets.
Paris France
I never thought I would travel to this city and wasn't looking forward to it when my company sent me. I found however the people were great and the city was awe inspiring. I hope to return some day. This is the Louvre as seen from the courtyard.
Pensacola Air Show
What can I say? Hot sun, hot performances, great people, and a beautiful beach.
This was my third year at the airshow and I never tire of it. A new camera let me zoom in a little closer, but don't be fooled - they really are "just over the water".
California Coast
I was sent on business, but what a memorable trip. I went out early and met a special friend. Our weekend was spent in the lovely town of Monterey. We went whale watching, wading in the icy surf, drove down the coast to Big Sur, and hiked among the Redwoods. On Monday, my friend flew home & I started a week of training. The trip and
especially the weekend is engraved in my memory forever.
Movies, movies, movies
This link takes you to my video clips.
There are videos of birds along the upper Texas coast and my dog playing catch... with herself.
Pictures taken in my yard and the surrounding area.
They were all shot in August of 2003. The sunsets were in a lull during a storm.
Texas Renaissance Festival
This is a spectacular event! It
is advertised as the biggest in the world. I can't attest to that, but the
grounds are permanent and have been used for many years. That means there are
mature gardens, vine covered seating areas, cobblestone sidewalks, etc. Click
on the castle to get a glimpse of pictures taken in Oct. 2003.
Autumn can be a pretty time of the year.
The morning of November 25th was our first frost. The grass was white with rime and crunched under foot. The surface of the ponds were hazy as moisture streamed off the warm water into the crisp cool air. I hope you enjoy these pictures of the ponds and surrounding area.
Sunrises and sunsets
These are all of my pictures of sunrises and sunsets. The album covers several years. I put it together for a friend that was looking for a sunset with "just the right colors and look". Because of that, you will see many similar shots that normally would have been culled.
High Island Texas
High Island is a town on the Bolivar peninsula of the Texas upper gulf coast. It is also home to a world famous bird sanctuary.
The sanctuary is maintained by the Houston Audubon Society and consists of multiple tracts. Depending on the weather, migrating birds can be found there in abundance. It also includes a rookery where in the spring, you will find birds of various species courting, nesting, and tending their young. Those include Rosette Spoonbills
and various
types of Egrets, Herons, Ibis, & Cormorants.
Pictures taken in January 2004
Most are of birds, but there a few "other" shots. I've been experimenting with a new camera that has a 10x optical and 3x digital zoom lens. Some of the shots are a bit blurry, but still show a few of the birds found in the area. Oh yeah, there's also a picture of my pet Amazon.
Stone Mountain Georgia
Stone Mountain is located just outside of
Atlanta. It is one massive piece of granite that bubbled up from the depths of Mother Earth. It is truly amazing when you consider only a small fraction of it is above ground. Stone Mountain Park is beautiful with hiking trails, a lake that meanders around most of the mountain, a lush golf course, and other amenities. The pictures here represent four trips - Feb. 2003, May 2003, Aug. 2003, and Feb 2004.
February, 2004
Toward the end of the month the wildflowers start to take off. Walking around my yard yielded the flowers displayed here.
March 2004
We had a very wet year thus far. The weather has dried out a bit and the flowers are showing up along the roadside. I have seen Indian paintbrush, Mexican blanket, Crows Poison, and many more.
Bluebird Nesting 1
This album contains pictures from the first of two Bluebird broods. It was removed when I added album to the right of this one. That album shows the second nesting of the Bluebirds.
Because this album contains pictures of the parents that weren't included in the second album. I have decided to add it back.
Bluebird Nesting 2
I was fortunate enough to have a pair of Bluebirds nest twice this spring. The interesting part is how the birds from the first clutch helped mom and dad with the second one. This album contains pictures from the second clutch. The first baby hatched on 5/15/2004. I stopped taking pictures on 5/31/2004 and they left the nest on 6/1/2004.
*** Please Note *** There are 32 picture in this album. Once the album is open, click
on the
little arrow above the index pictures to see additional index pictures.
It's April and nature is definitely awake.
Green herons
These birds have been coming to my pond semi-regularly over the past 2 years. For whatever reason, this one let me get to within 20 feet of the tree it was in. Here are the results of that encounter.
A Wonderful Place to Live
It's May and Southeast Texas abounds with natural beauty. I hope you enjoy my attempt to share a few sights of birds, bayous, and the Big Thicket.
Chihuly Exhibit
The Atlanta Botanical Garden has an exhibit of blown glass sculptures by the renown
artist, Dale Chihuly. His work is whimsical, colorful, and lends itself to the flora. The exhibit will be at the gardens until October 31, 2004. If you live in the Atlanta area, I strongly encourage you to visit the botanical gardens before then. Whether you see it in person or not, I hope you enjoy my pictures of this wonderful art and
the gardens beautiful plants.
Fall 2005
One of natures treats I look forward to each fall is, believe it or not, grass!
The back roads on the way to work are lined with a wispy grass whose seeds turn mauve. Quite attractive as they sway in the breeze. It's October and the dew owns the mornings. That makes for some interesting pictures.
I added some pictures from November. I love that
wildflowers are still blooming!
Moody Gardens
A recent trip to Moody Gardens located on Galveston Island.
Moody Gardens has one of the best aquariums I've seen. There is also a rain forest pyramid I could spend an entire day in just watching the birds and trying to catch a glimpse of the tamarins playing overhead.
Tis the season - Happy Holidays to one and all
These are some pictures taken in my yard over the Christmas Holidays. We put a planter full of seed on the deck railing and it attracted woodpeckers, cardinals, jays, tit-mouse, and a bunch of goldfinches. Each morning finds a Great Blue Heron fishing at the ponds. One morning I went walking in the field taking pictures of the frost.
New Orleans Holiday
Debbie & I spent the New Year holiday with friends in New Orleans. The weather was wonderful - allowing us to walk the streets in short-sleeve shirts.
These pictures are mostly of buildings, but includes some street performers.
Florida Vacation
I was fortunate enough to travel to Florida and stay with some delightful friends. They live in paradise, er, that is Cocoa. While I have visited Florida numerous times, this was my first trip to this area. These pictures are mostly of Sea World, but some were taken at Merritt Island NWR.
Pictures from January, February and March
There are Wildflowers, Sunrises, and Birds from my back yard and the High Island Rookery (supported by the Houston Audubon Society). I will be adding on to this same album, so if you enjoy the pictures, check back in a couple of weeks.
April in Southeast Texas
April is a month full of migrating birds, nesting, and an abundance of wildflowers.
May 2005
I found a plant nursery on the internet with some amazing plants. www.yuccado.com It is near Hempstead, Texas which is about a three hour drive from my house. My son & I made a day of it and on the way home dropped down from Houston to Galveston Island. From there we took the ferry across Galveston bay and after a stop at High Island, drove back north to our home in Sour Lake. These are some
pictures taken along the way.
Summer 2005
They are mainly pictures from our yard, but include
some from the Houston zoo as well as the usual pictures taken to and from work
Dragonflies, Butterflies, and more!
A close up look at some colorful and/or interesting "bugs"
After The Storm - Hurricane Rita - Landfall 09/24/2005
Many websites have appeared with photographs showing athe damage and despair Rita left behind.
While I have
taken a small number of that type of photograph, you won't find them here. Instead, this album shows the beauty that remains after the storm passed. It is not my intent to minimize what happened or the suffering endured by those still without a home and/or job, rather to honor the spirit the people of Southeast Texas have shown during these traumatic times. Those with losses show an amazing attitude and resolve. They and many others have rolled up their sleeves and helped in what ever fashion they could. I love
my community and the people in it.
Click On an image to view its contents.
The images to the left are links to albums containing related pictures. When you move the cursor over an album, a description will be displayed here. You will also notice the image changes for that album.
I hope you enjoy my pictures.
If you do, tell a friend - if you don't, tell me.
November 2005
November has brought a break in the heat with warm days and cool nights. Some wildflowers are blooming and butterflies are frequent visitors.
High Island, Texas - Bird Sanctuaries
The Sanctuaries suffered some damage from hurricane Rita, but due to some hard work by the Houston Audubon society and friends, the boardwalks and trails are in good shape. With many of the trees down on the rookery island, plans are being made to erect artificial platforms for the birds to build nests.
Kent State Exhibit - Sept. 2007
In 2006, I was fortunate enough to be invited to show some of my photographs at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. I was invited back this year and here are the pictures I selected for the show. I hope you enjoy them and if you are in area, stop by the third floor of the university library. The pictures will be on display during the month of September.
Here are some sites I support or have an interest in:
NatureQuest is the best birding and all-round nature festival in Central Texas. It is being held April 22-24-2010. We stayed at Rio Frio Lodging and highly recommend it.
The Texas Bluebird Society promotes the conservation of Bluebirds and other cavity-nesting songbirds which are threatened by loss of habitat and invasive species. Their motto is "Bluebirds across Texas... ...one nestbox at a time."
